Antique George I Chip Carved Cedar Six Plank Chest/Coffer, Early 18th Century

Antique George I Chip Carved Cedar Six Plank Chest/Coffer, Early 18th Century
Antique Storage Chest/Coffer
A decorative six-plank chest, unusually made from cedar with chip-carved corners and stylised floral carved decoration.
The top is inscribed with the initials J.S. and dated 1720, which dates it to the early 18th century during the reign of George I.
The lid lifts up to reveal a large compartment with a smaller till.
Original hand forged iron hinges and lock (lacking key and latch).
The chest is solid and sturdy, and still a very usable piece. There is wear throughout commensurate with age and some minor losses. There is an old honest repair to the back panel, which can be best seen from the inside. There is some old, dead woodworm present, which we have treated for good measure.
Approximate measurements: 118cm wide x 39cm deep x 45cm high.
