Set of Antique Estate Made Painted Pine Country House Steps, English, 19th Century
Antique Set of Steps
A set of four steps, of simple but well made construction in pine using mortice and tenon joints as well as hand cut screws, partially painted in white.
They would have originally been made for a country house, probably made on site and would have been used as a simple staircase in a kitchen, barn or ancillary working building.
The steps have more recently been used for potting/displaying plants and have weathered naturally over time to great decorative effect.
Although they still seem solid and sturdy and can hold my weight without issue I would probably suggest their continued use as a display piece or stand rather than a usable staircase. Either for potting plants on a patio or orangery or they would also work well as a display for a collection of pottery or similar.
They are in good vintage condition, all joints still seem solid and sturdy. There is cosmetic wear throughout commensurate with age which we think adds to their charm and aesthetic. Because of their latter use for potting/displaying plants the wood has worn further in places most notionally on the tops of the steps and also underneath the feet.
Approximate measurements: 62cm wide x 89cm deep x 78cm high. The steps themselves each measure roughly 55cm wide x 22cm deep. The top of the first step is roughly 17cm from the ground and the rest are roughly 17-18cm from the last.
