Antique Swedish Folk Art Marriage Chest Storage Box, Early 19th Century
Antique Scandinavian Painted Pine Chest
Beautifully painted with pink roses, oxeye daisies, forget-me-nots, wild pansies and other flowers and foliage forming a garland surrounding the initials ‘CDG’ and dated ‘1828’. The edges of the top and base are painted with multi coloured stripes and the top and sides are also decorated with further flowers.
Originating from Sweden, this would have originally been a marriage chest, gifted to the bride filled with her bridal trousseau and filled with linens for the marriage ahead.
The original lock and key are still present, as are its original iron carry handles and hinges. It is raised on four simple tapered feet. The interior reveals a large storage compartment and it retains its original candle section with lid.
It is in very good vintage condition with only minor wear commensurate with age, the painting has rubbed in places, mainly on the top. There is some woodworm present but this is mainly underneath, on the base. We have treated this for good measure.
