Pair of Wooden Stools

Of naturalistic form, each carved from single pieces of an elm trunk, reputably using a chainsaw.

Hugely decorative and sculptural pieces by Maxie Lane (1910-2014).

Maxie Lane was an artist, author and sculptor, the son of an "Irish Tinker", who abandoned him when he was young and left him with an Aunt in Bristol. He served in the Army and Navy and documented his experiences in his two autobiographical books, Running and Sea Running. His sculpture entitled, The Last Supper Table, is on permanent display at Furzey Gardens, in the New Forest, and is thought to be the largest English elm sculpture in the world. As an artist, he held exhibitions all over the world, including in New York and London.

These stools probably date from the late 20th century, circa 1970s-1980s.

They are both in good usable vintage condition, they both have wear consistent with age and natural splits in the wood etc. One of the stools has a repair on one of the footrests but this feels solid and secure.

The slightly taller stool measures 73cm high x 46cm wide x 38cm deep and the other measures 69cm high x 42cm wide x 34cm deep.
