Antique Greek Folk Art Straw Work Marquetry Jewellery Box, c. 1900
Antique Folk Art Jewellery (Jewelry) Box
A decorative wooden jewellery box profusely inlaid with tiny pieces of different colour straw to depict flowers, geometric shapes and also depictions of ancient Greek ruins.
The top is also inscribed with the word “KEPKYPA”, the capitalised version of Κέρκυra which translates in English to Kerkyra (Corfu). Corfu is the stunning Greek island in the Ionian Sea famous for its lush greenery, Venetian architecture, historic Old Town, and beautiful beaches. The ruins depicted on the box are almost certainly depictions of actual ancient sites on Corfu.
With fitted blue linen interior edged with white rope twist with three separate compartments and with a small oval mirror in the lid.
The box was probably made on the Greek island of Corfu and dates from the late 19th to early 20th century period. Circa 1900.
The box is largely in good vintage condition, the majority of the straw work survives well but there are some losses and wear as you might expect. The interior is also in good vintage condition, there is some staining to the lining fabric but nothing too serious. The mirror is intact but slightly foxed.
Approximate measurements: 29cm wide x 20cm deep x 11cm high.
