Antique Framed Tiles

A set of six hand painted glazed earthenware tiles. each one is formed in a slightly three-dimensional relief and depicts a deer hunt with a man in a turban (probably a prince) on horseback chasing a deer, sword raised and surrounded by flowers and foliage.

Painted using the typical 19th century Qajar mineral colour palette of cobalt blue, turquoise, yellow ochre, greens and browns with a clear, quartz-based top glaze. They all appear to be painted by the same hand and are all slightly different and unique.

They probably would have originally been installed in a fashionable Victorian home, possibly forming part of a fireplace and could potentially be reinstalled in a similar situation or as a splash back behind a sink. They also work really well in the current form as an artwork in their own right.

The Qajar Dynasty, or the ‘Persian’ Empire , controlled parts the area of present day countries Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan, as well as the southern parts of Georgia. The Qajars ruled from 1779 to 1924.

These tiles probably date from the late 19th Century period. circa 1880.

Later framed, probably sometime in the mid-20th Century period in a simple green painted wooden frame.

The tiles are in great vintage condition with wear commensurate with age including some crazing to the glaze, some areas of discolouration and minor chips to the edges. They are free from any serious structural issues. The frame is also in good vintage order with some minor wear commensurate with age.

Approximate measurements overall: 62cm wide x 44cm high x 3cm deep. Each tile measures approximately 18cm (7”) square.
