Antique Original Oil on Canvas Paintings Depicting a Victorian Husband and Wife

Depicting an earnest-looking man with bushy eyebrows and sideburns, smartly dressed in black tie with a stiff white dress shirt. His wife has friendly eyes and a familiar face, she is wrapped in a cream-coloured shawl with a lace cap and both a yellow scarf and a pink ribbon fastened around her neck by a cameo brooch.

Both portraits have a somewhat provincial style to them but are by a fairly accomplished hand capturing plenty of feeling and character from both sitters.

Probably dating from the early Victorian, mid-19th century period. Circa 1840s-1850s.

The paintings have been passed down from generation to generation to the previous owner since its commission. Although the names of the sitters have been lost along the way the family is of Bristol origin in the West Country of England.

Framed in their original and highly decorative gilt frames.

The paintings themselves are in very good vintage condition. There is a somewhat dusty feeling to them, and some wear commensurate with age but no serious issues.

The frames have survived well. There are some losses here and there and some natural wear commensurate with age but nothing seriously wrong.

Each one measures 96cm high x 83cm wide x 9cm deep overall.
