Antique Original Oil on Canvas Painting

Depicting a charming rural scene centred on a large white farmhouse in the middle of a lush green valley, surrounded by rolling hills. There is a figure dressed in red waving back at the house with a stick. There are a gaggle of geese in the foreground. All underneath a pinkish sky.

Painted in a naive, folky style. It appears as though the artist certainly knew her subject; the movement of the geese to the lower right feels very lifelike, and there is great attention to detail. The roses in front of the house, the smoke from the chimney, the fences and gates throughout the picture and the hay stooks in the fields are all wonderfully depicted and hugely evocative.

Signed to the lower left ‘Amy Smith’.

The Windsor and Newton canvas can be dated to the late 19th century, circa 1895, so presumably the work was painted then or soon after that. Until it came into our possession, the work was behind glass, and it appears that it had been behind the glass for a great number of years, if not since its creation. Although unusual for a work in oil, it appears in this case to have preserved the piece and is in remarkable condition for its age. The work probably dates from the late 19th or early 20th century.

In its original simple gilt frame.

As previously mentioned, the condition of the painting itself is great, as it was previously protected behind glass. There is only very minimal wear. The frame is in good vintage condition with some minor losses commensurate with age.

Approximate overall measurements: 49cm x 37cm x 5cm.
