Antique Painted Domed Trunk

A highly decorative chest of lovely proportions with a slightly domed top.

Made of softwood in its original paint with hand-painted floral decoration on a dark charcoal/black ground.

These marriage trunks were usually made in the Auge Valley surrounding Rouen in Normandy and were used primarily for the bride’s trousseau at a wedding.

This example probably dates from the late 18th or possibly early 19th century. Circa 1780-1820 in date.

The trunk is in good vintage order and is still very usable, there is wear throughout and some losses which adds to its charm and tells its story.

Approximate measurements 64cm wide x 41cm deep x 37cm high.
