Antique Chinese Elm Low Table / Day Bed, Large Coffee Table, 19th Century
Antique Chinese Coffee Table/Day Bed
A larger than average Kang type table which would have originally sat over a heated brick platform (Kang), these tables were generally multi purpose, the focal point of the home and were used for communal dining, serving tea, as writing tables and sometimes slept on too.
It could be used today as a large coffee table or could be used as a generous day bed piled high with cushions.
Constructed from Elm with an ornately carved apron on each side and 'sword' legs supported by double stretchers.
Probably originating from Shanxi in Northern China and dating from the mid 19th Century, towards the latter part of the Qing Dynasty, c. 1850-1880.
It is in good vintage condition with wear commensurate with age. The table feels sturdy and solid. The timber has been naturally worn over the years form use including some splits, repairs, some minor losses and there is an overall worn rustic feel to the piece.
Approximate measurements: 206cm wide x 108cm deep x 55cm high.
