Vintage Mid-Century African Bird Figure
An unusually large example of one of a bird made by the Zulu in Southern Africa.
Retailed under the brand name ‘Original Mariachi Art’ the remnants of the label underneath read ‘Hand-painted by the Zulu Girls of Assagay Kraal, Zululand’. It is understood that there was a connection between this enterprise and Jane Bedford, South African Artist and Collector of Zulu Art.
A stylised paper mache toucan with typically bold brightly painted colours and large bulbous eyes.
It is in good vintage condition, there are some small areas of wear but nothing serious or structurally wrong.
Measuring 83cm long x 33cm deep x 47cm high.
