Large Antique German Painted Garden Gnome Figure, c. 1920s

Large Antique German Painted Garden Gnome Figure, c. 1920s
Antique Gnome Statue
A characterful depiction of a typically cheeky gnome with a pointed hat, perched against a tree stump and holding a flower pot that can be planted.
An early and larger-than-average example of a garden gnome.
Looking under the base, it appears to be made from terracotta with some form of plaster layer and then hand-painted with polychrome decoration.
Probably originating from Germany, Austria or possibly England and dating from the early part of the 20th Century. Circa 1920s.
Signed to the rear with initials ‘T.R.’ or possibly ‘F.R.’
Provenance: previously at Shardeloes Manor in Buckinghamshire.
It is in very good vintage condition. I cannot find any significant damage, which is unusual for this type of piece. The original surface is worn and weathered throughout, which we think adds to its charm and tells its story. Layers of paint have also weathered naturally to include remnants of the original paint, which has worn naturally over time, with a weathered patina.
Approximate measurements: 74cm (2’5”) high x 34cm wide x 25cm deep.
