Antique Painted Plaster Bust of Dame Christabel Pankhurst 1880-1958

Christabel, the daughter of Emiline studied law but because of her sex couldn’t become a barrister. She was a key member of the suffrage movement and used her legal knowledge to help the cause. Around 1905 when it didn’t seem like much was happening she then started to advocate civil disobedience. By the time WWI broke out this included arson, bombings and attacks on works of art in public galleries. By the 1930s she was made a Dame and lived most of her later life in California.

Dating from the early 20th century.

Grey painted plaster on an ebonised base with bun feet.

It is in generally good vintage order. As you can see from the photos she is worn in places, mostly where the paint has rubbed off but there are some small losses to the plaster but nothing too serious. It could be repainted very easily but I have grown to love the wear and to me when I look at her it represents her tumultuous life.

Overall measurements: 44cm high x 26.5cm wide x 20.5cm deep.
