Vintage Original Oil on Board Painting by Leonard Bennetts (New Zealand, 1933-2004)

Depicting a dramatic landscape with a gnarled tree in the foreground with further representations of trees and foliage throughout which become quite loose and flowing and almost abstractions on the natural forms.

The artist has used thick, impasto brushstrokes to great effect creating a rich texture matched with expressive colour palette ranging from earthy reds, oranges, browns and sage green to expertly depict the mood of the scene.

Leonard Bennetts was born in New Zealand in 1933 and settled in London in the post war period. He exhibited widely in London, most notably at the Royal Academy, Chelsea Arts Club, the Mall Galleries and his work was included in the 1983 Haywood Gallery exhibition "Landscape in Britain 1850-1950".  

The painting itself is unsigned but there is a hand written label verso for ‘Leonard Bennetts’, the previous owner purchased the artwork from the estate of the artist.

Probably dating from the mid to late 20th Century. Circa 1970s.

The painting is in good vintage condition with no serious issues and only minor wear commensurate with age.
