Crumbling Bridge Landscape, Oil on Canvas by Charles S. Meacham, 1920s

Crumbling Bridge Landscape, Oil on Canvas by Charles S. Meacham, 1920s

£0.00

Antique Original Oil Painting by Charles Stephen Meacham (1860-1940).

Depicting a scene, probably at dusk, focusing on an ancient Roman-type bridge, possibly in Italy or Corsica, there are various figures crossing the bridge as well as underneath at the rocky riverside.

The artist skillfully captured light and shade using colour and also cleverly used impasto techniques on the bridge to demonstrate the stonework. A very atmospheric and evocative scene.

Signed ‘C.S. Meacham’ to the lower right.

Meacham was an illuminator, poster designer, painter, and illustrator born in Catford, London and studied at Birmingham School of Art. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, London in the 17th exhibition of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, in 1926. Between 1924 and 1933 he also exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in London, the Royal Cambrian Academy in Conwy, Wales, the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, and at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists.

The painting itself is largely in great vintage condition. There are no holes or tears in the canvas or restoration. There is some minor wear to the paint but nothing too serious.
